Birthdays...Our Rushville Getaway...Living Dangerously and More

Ended the long long week with a celebration of Emma's 14th Birthday.

They grow up so fast!

From this

to this

In the blink of an eye.

Teenagers are so much fun, though. Like giant over-exuberant puppies.

Got to catch up with James and Nicole a bit, too.

John and I taking a midweek trek to celebrate Loretta's 79th Birthday as well.

They are being so careful...having been on complete lock-down since February.

Now we could have 20 minute masked visits...outside...appointment only...no  contact and socially distanced across 2 tables.

Everything we brought her had to be wiped down before they let her have it.

We scheduled both an evening and morning slot.

So great to see her...chat...have a little birthday.

And so hard not to be able to hug at the end of our visits.

Maybe next year we will all get to go out, enjoy a day together and hug like crazy at the  end of it!

Our Getaway was amazing, and so are you, John!

"Though you weren't ever going to let me out of that duffel..."                                                                      Ralph The Travel Bear

Including a long bubbly soak in the hot tub and Chinese Take-Out in bed!

And cold Pork Lo Mein the next morning...breakfast of champions...

It was nice to, even briefly, have a return to normalcy.

The next day we even decided to live dangerously and had the first sit-down restaurant meal we have had together since February.

Hand-sanitizer and masks at the door.

Masks in the building and while the waitress was at the table.  And if you got up from the table.

Empty tables staggered in the dining area so no one was near anyone else.

The New Normal.

Even got to visit Our Gadget (...the kitten formerly known as Suri...)

I was a bit afraid she wouldn't remember me.

"OMG...Dad you FOUND Mom!!!!"  ~Gadget

But it was wonderful...and soon I was treated to Gadget Snuggles!

What a Perfect Getaway!

We are making plans for September's Fishing, Fun and Grill-Out already.
Always something to look forward to.

Enjoying the last of Summer...and plans for Fall Decorating and getting the herbs cut to dry soon.

Today I have my Instacart...and a pork loin to slow roast...and sweet corn on the cob...and baked sweet potato with butter and spiced praline pecans...

Amber just finished with the floors and I have the house back in order.

Laundry is churning...and life is good!

Convention...Almost Fall...and A Cup of Deconstruction

"I'll just sit over here in my nest and watch."  ~Sofi

Recently stumbled across a trend I had somehow missed out on for two years.

Deconstruction.

Who knew?

Certainly not John and I, who had no idea it existed until this week.

After finding the deconstructed Christmas decorating I delved further and discovered, apparently, deconstruction was quite The Trend for a couple of years.

Better late than never...I guess.

The deconstruction spans decor, runways and food.

And whereas I found the deconstructed fashions to be...well...not for me...

I was intrigued by some of the decorating ideas...and, of course, the foodie in me loved the idea of deconstructed meals.

The Beef Manhattan Hobby Kit.

Some assembly necessary.

The brainchild of 3 Star Michelin Chef Ferran Adria from Spain.

Deconstruction sometimes involves just breaking down a familiar dish into its components presented artfully separate on the serving dish with a splash of sauce.

Or it can be a change of texture (i.e. gelification or foams)

Or in the presentation.

The final trick to Deconstructed Food is that when the ingredients (consumed separately) are finished the diner recognized the memory taste of the dish they represent.

What they have just eaten.

I must fix a dinner like this sometime, for us.

Sounds like a fun and wonderful challenge!

Tonight, since there were already tacos on the menu...I tried the components approach and enjoyed it very much.

Tah Dah.

Deconstructed Taco.

One pile of sour cream with julienne ripe tomato.

One pile with shredded cheddar blend cheese.

Larger chunked beef cooked in spicy taco seasoning and spread between the two.

A wedge of lettuce.

Broken taco shell pieces.

And Cilantro Garnish.

(no salsa, or I would have daubed a red circle in the left hand corner of the plate)

All of the ingredients eaten solo...and success...because by the end of dinner it was indeed a taco...maybe even better than a conventional taco in that you really paid attention to the different textures, temperatures, and flavors.

Saw an artful presentation of deconstructed Beef Wellington...and deconstructed chocolate cream pie that I want to try with us, sometime!

Deconstruction.

Who knew?

The Democratic National Convention all presented virtually this year in light of Covid-19.

Speaking of deconstruction...of Trump and his chances for any hope of re-election.

Caught the highlights.

Both Michelle and Barack Obama's speeches

Jill and Joe Biden

and, of course, Kamala Harris and Joe Biden's Acceptance Speeches.

Class Acts, all of them.

It will be so refreshing NOT to have the daily chaos and shit-show we have been subjected to for the last 4 years.

And a return to decency and decorum.

Waking to crows cawing and chilly mornings, now.

The patio garden waning. The roses bloomed and spent and their foliage getting the deep wine color at the tips. The herb basket is full as well as my catnip and ready to cut and dry soon.

I've been using off it fresh all Summer...and still have enough basil to Feed the World.

I see Pesto with Pasta soon!

And my favorite time in the Patio Garden

Early.

The first morning sun...with a cup of coffee!

Soon it will be time to decorate for Fall.

This Week's Book

And it was okay...

Just okay.

I had imagined this being a building-the-perfect-beast from someone with an intimate inside seat.

And it was.

Sort of.

It was also the lives of everyone else caught in Fred Sr. and his wife's web.

And how their dysfunctionality destroyed their children (including Fred Jr. and Donald) and even their grandchildren.

 (including the author).

It is a sad book full of hurt, pain and an attempt at catharsis as Mary explores the death of her father (Fred Jr) and the blame she (still) places on Donald and her grandfather whose actions and indifference and callousness and expectations she blames for both her parents divorce, her father's alcoholism and his death.

It proves that money cannot buy manners, compassion, love, happiness or contentment.

And why clinical psychologists often need their own analyst.

Eye-opening read...and somewhat depressing.

This Week's Movie:

The Broadway Production.

Just incredible!

Jonathan Groff was probably my favorite as Mad King George...as well as providing a great deal of humor.

If you have not seen this, and you love musicals...you must!

A Cinderella Saturday here...and maybe some playing in the plants later.

Have a Great Weekend...

Politics & Covid-19

These are schoolchildren during the Spanish Flu of 2018.

And this is in 2020 with Covid-19.

Already...only a week or so back...many have already re-closed...have numerous cases and even more contacts quarantined for 14 days.

Personally, I have no idea how this can be sustainable.

I get the idea that people have to get back to work.

I get that a lot of kids prefer in classroom learning...that parents need the break...that some children do very poorly with e-learning...

But it will soon be cold and flu season...on top of the Covid uncertainty.

Already my grandchildren's school has discovered cases and contacts are being traced and sent home for 14 day quarantine.

Perhaps the most problematic is that this virus is so new...we don't even know what we don't know about it yet.

The long term effects on children or adults.

Scary stuff...

The Covid numbers so big now it is hard to wrap your brain around.

Over 22 Million infected Worldwide.

Over 750,000 Dead.

Here in the US Over 5 and a half Million infected.

175,000 Dead.

Indiana has now surpassed 80,000 cases.

Nearly 3,000  Hoosiers dead.

My County of Putnam is now showing 375 cases.

Only 8 have died here so far.

Sadly, one of the eight was the first doctor I worked with out of Nursing School.

No family,  but several friends infected with it right now.

So yeah...it's personal.

My boys grown, but worrying about my grands...and school...and their future health.

Their future.

Which, of course, brings us to poltics.

Only 76 days until we can begin to clear some of the RUBBISH that seems to have accumulated in the White House.

Joe Biden wasn't my first choice for President.

Kamala Harris wasn't my first choice for VP.

But they have my vote, and are a breath of fresh air after the last (almost) four years of complicity and chaos.

Is anybody associated with the Trump Administration NOT involved with Pedophilia, White Supremacy, Fraud, Embezzlement, or a Felony????

Some with multiples of the above.

I am ready for Joe and Jill...who have a real loving relationship instead of a contract.

I am ready for nice, quiet, politics for the average person...not billion dollar handouts to companies and rich buddies.

Still waiting for it to trickle down, are you????

(...don't piss over the fence and then tell me it is raining...okay???)

I am ready for smiles and inclusion instead of scowls and division.

I am ready for positive infrequent tweets instead of daily meltdowns...name calling and hateful rhetoric.

I am ready for a cohesive National approach to Covid...and slowly...eventually...a return to something resembling normal.

I don't think that is too much to hope for...work toward.

Perseids...and an Odd Week...

In case you missed the meteor shower this week...yes...the sky was falling!

The Perseids

https://youtu.be/WZlJFtlkRNY

A week of ups and down here...

Brunch with Brenda preempted by Covid...which was kind of scary.

Another near miss.

Diane in Olando right now helping with her stepfather as her Mother is hospitalized with it as well.

Joe and Kel slowly getting over it.

Know 9 people personally who have it/had it/ or are getting over it...and 1 dead from it.

Not a hoax, people.

Stay safe.

InstaCart and Grub Hub are becoming my best buddies.

Sisters Day preempted by illness as well...but thankfully not the virus...

Lisa...just sick.

We have rescheduled.

And Chris...who almost amputated his finger with a slipped hatchet this week...so thankful it was not worse.

So yeah...it has been eventful.

The grands...all back to school now.

                                     Emma, Aiden, Brenden, Kaylee
                                           Natalyn, Hannah and Jazzie
And just settling in with Sofi for a quiet... NPB day....play in the plants...read a bit...maybe paint...and a nice cat nap...

Zen Weekend.

Good news...Mary Trump's book will arrive next week!

Can't wait!

And now that AMC has opened...expecting some new movies out soon.

What an odd year it has been.

Have a relaxing one...

Ran across this early picture of Sofi the other day...when she was still a little bat-earred kitten.

Can't believe she used to be this tiny!

Also...

Has anyone else seen the Deconstructed look for Christmas and for Wreaths?

I have to admit...I'm a little curious...

Breaking News: VP Selection

YES!!!!!

It is official! Former California Prosecutor Kamala Harris will be Joe Biden's 2020 running mate.

(...and we all breathed out...)

So excited about a Biden/Harris ticket....an unbeatable team!

And yes...it took Trump 8 whole minutes to start tweeting horrible things about her, and calling her "nasty".

It's okay. It is only going to take us 84 more days to call him "irrelevant" and "former POTUS" so I am good with that.

What a team.

Ready to hit the ground running...

So good for all Americans.

(...yes...even you Trump fanatics that vote against your own self interest and have already started referring to her as Kowmala...sad and pathetic...)

84 days and we can end this thing.

In late January we can start FIXING this mess.

Will Covid be gone? Hell no. But we will have a coordinated NATIONAL plan...and a President and Vice-President who believe in SCIENCE.

Will the economy be stronger?  In time. Increased confidence in the global markets...and true stimulus in America will set us on the road to recovery.

This will not happen overnight...but it will happen.

Personally, I hope he chooses Adam Schiff as AG.

I'd like to see Mayor Pete in Veterans Affairs.

But seriously...won't it be good to see a competent cabinet for a change instead of Acting Secretaries and people with absolutely no experience except for the fact they donated large amounts of cash...or were complete sycophants???

Really.

Looking forward to the debates...

We're going to need a lot more popcorn!

Celebrated with a wedge of New York Cheesecake tonight!!!!

Premature Fall...Third Generation Car Guys...Camping and More

I KNOW we need to get through August before I start decorating for Fall.

But, sooooooooooooooooooo hard to do when the temps have dropped in the low 70's and it is 55 degrees at night...and the crows wake me up most mornings now with their incessant caws...and the skies have attained that beautiful clear blue.

I have already fixed the first small batch of Grandpa's Chili.

But rules are rules- and going to enjoy this last month of Summer, if it kills me.

The pink roses now full blown and beautiful.

My herbs huge and soon to be brought in to dry.

Sofi enjoying some of her fresh catnip.

She is such a Nip-Head.

Chris and the Guys made it back from their First Annual Friends Camping Adventure.

A week of fishing, boating, camping, good food and fun!

Coming home to make Survival Bracelets (equipped with fire-starter, fishhooks and line, medical supplies and such rolled tightly and then woven into many feet of paracord) for everyone.

Just black with just an emergency pack of M&M's for me, please...lol!

John has been out enjoying this beautiful weather, too.

Biking and getting some fishing in, as well!

Panorama of his
Fishing Hole.

His grandson obviously has The Car Guy Gene, too...bringing home this 81 Vette to fix up, from Ohio...

Complete with T-Top and chrome straight pipes.

John sent me a video with sound of it running and she is beastly!!!

Nice project car!

In the news

Wilfred Brimley passed away .

and the astronauts returned from the International Space Station compliments of a joint effort by NASA and SPACEX

And you have to appreciate the first words they heard upon splashdown

"Thank you for flying SPACEX."

I laughed out loud.

And some things this week...not so humorous.

The return of the students to packed schools and already a surge in Covid cases.

And the beginning of Bike Week at Sturgis.

Expecting 250,000 this year.

How could THAT possibly go wrong, eh????

Don't get me wrong. I think Bike Week is great...but not this year.

Not in the middle of a Pandemic.

Worldwide over 19 and a half million infections now.

Over 725,000 people dead.

Here in The States over 5 million cases and 164,000 dead.

Some hoax.

Trump still predicting it will magically disappear...go away...

(...it should be noted he has been saying this now since March...)

sigh

My state now has a mask mandate and most everything is canceled through Fall.

Bright red state, be damned...our governor has done a fine job of being sensible about moving slowly on reopening.

Gardening,  Basking, The Resumation of the Outreach Program and Current Books, Recipes and Cooking, and Painting is saving my sanity.

Jill (Lennon's Bio-Mom) and I are embarking soon on Fall Paintings together.

Hers set in New England where they have absolutely breath-taking Autumns.

Mine will be in Indiana with pumpkin-fields, pumpkins, Maple trees and Sycamores, perhaps.

We will see.

No new movies this week...but

The Book of the Week:

A cookbook filled with one dish (beneath a flaky pie crust) meals.

Some great ideas for Fall and Winter!

Both a Fast Day and a Cinderella Day, here.

Out for some sunshine and a quick bask...then back to start a pot of soup and get the laundry and cleaning done.

Have a Relaxing Weekend!

PostScript:

I'm a Nurse, dammit, not a Hairdresser!

Yeah...so I got tired of the grown out...overgrown...salted caramel that I has professionally done last Fall...

(you see where this is going, right???)

"How hard can frosting be???"

I pondered.

Yeah.

So there I stood in front of the mirror with the dotted cap and the crochet hook included in the box of highlighter...when I got satisfied with what the box said would be face framing highlights, I mixed the noxious goop and put it on.

Sofi fled the room...wanting no part of the fumes, or possibly  just the blame.

About 50 minutes later I shampooed it all out.

It isn't the tiger-striped streak of some truly bad dye jobs.

I guess I should be thankful for that.

It is still pretty bad.

The caramel highlights are just that...caramel...no salt to it.

It will possibly look better styled...still damp...too early to tell.

When my stylist opens back up I will go for a cut and salted caramel frosting again...as soon as she stops shaking her head and laughing at my misguided efforts.

I learned a valuable lesson today...some things are best left to the professionals.

More anon...
