Father's Day Tribute...This Week...The Garden...and Our Marshall Adventure!

The Getaway Car...

But first.

Last Sunday was Father's Day, and the boys worked together on a song that James wrote a while back to honor Bill.

The tie on the mike-stand one of Bill's favorites from back in the day.

A beautiful tribute to a wonderful Father.

This week...very busy.

A note from my sister, Tina, letting me know that one of the Easter Egg Chicks that they had named Violet...was most likely a Victor.

But since Roo (their Rooster) already had an established flock of 8 that this little guy will just have his own flock with the younger chicks.

Also took the nice weather to clean up the aftermath of the storm...and "paint-the-roses-red"...well, do the touch up on the faux ivy to make it a bit more imperfect and lifelike.

Browning the vines and some yellow and brownish spots.

Amazed, because three of the poor white lilies that were snowed on...flooded out...and beaten by hail and rain out of a tubful managed to bloom anyway.

Have to admit...these things are hardy. Went out to tear out and replant the pot but just didn't have the heart to remove them until the three finish.

And then there was Marshall!

An adventure planned after John realized on his birth certificate it said that he was born in Marshall, Illinois...instead of Terre Haute (...which is where he was raised and all he ever remembered...)

So off we went.

Where we saw our first

 sign ever...in West Terre Haute.

"Sorry..Bob...going to be late to work this morning. No, everything is okay...it is those damned turtles, again..."

Yes...apparently we ARE easily amused.

When we got to the Indiana/Illinois border he reminded me to get my passport ready.

"OMG....do you think maybe your Mom swam across the Walbash River with you??? Maybe you're an illegal immigrant!"

Yeah...we are both "not quite right", okay?

About 20 minutes later we arrived at the Marshall/Paris exit.

Pursuing a collective hallucination of one of the oldest and best cafe's in Marshall...The Crossroad Cafe.

...it must be true...it was on the internet...

Instead we got lost.

So lost.

So fucking lost.

The whole GPS

"I got nothin'" lost.

Paved road to gravel roads to this

"OMG...there is GRASS growing down the middle of the gravel road!!!"

Like driving up some farmer's lane.

Then it turned us (another right turn...like some horrible rural NASCAR parody) until it deposited us back out on the paved road where we had started out.

We were laughing hard by this time.

                                                It made the trip!

Eventually we did find Mainstreet Marshall...and it was like stepping back in time.

Although, we did not find The Crossroads Cafe for lunch we did manage to find a similar 1950 diner.

With the BEST BLT Club either of us had ever eaten...

We also found out something interesting from The Locals (...a group of friendly guys..probably farmers...just hanging out at the local cafe spinning tales in the heat of the day...)

Since his birth certificate specified Marshall Illinois...and there was no local hospital (now or back then) he was probably born at home and delivered by one of the 3 local doctors.

"I KNEW it, honey....you WERE born in a barn!!!"

Like one of the locals joked about his nearby friend

"Yep...born in a barn...second stall on your right."

Now with a new mystery to untangle...but full and happy and given directions to Crossroads for the next time we come back (...maybe Fall), we wandered outside to discover Marshall.

The popcorn wagon is actually still used by the Lion's Club!

And a local we took to calling The Tour Guide even showed us this!

Like the World's Biggest Skillet or Ball of Twine it seems that Marshall has

The World's Biggest Gavel

...we'll have to take his word for it...

It was a great adventure, love!!!

Until next time...

Virtual Africa: Democratic Republic of The Congo

Today, we are here.

...virtually anyway...

The Heart of Africa.

Like most of Africa...the Congo is a country of contradictions.

Great beauty and great conflict.

Wealth and poverty.

Spectacular wildlife and relentless poachers.

Until 1997 this was better know as Zaire.

It has been the scene of too many internal conflicts and civil uprisings to list here.  Currently it is under French Domain...tomorrow...who knows?

So many bloody uprisings the area is known for its genocide and rapes.

When it was still Zaire the term

"le mal Zairois"

or Zaire Sickness was coined because corruption was so common-place.

The current President and government has been in place since 2008...we are hopeful.

But this is not The Congo we are here to explore...instead we will focus on the people...the beautiful Congo River...the rain-forests and wildlife including the Silverback Gorillas...and more.

The Congo covers 905,567 square miles making it roughly the size of Spain, France, Germany, Sweden and Norway combined!

It is the second largest country in Africa.

It is currently experiencing the eruption of Mount Nyiragongo, an active volcano in its midst.

Video 2021 Eruption

https://youtu.be/JZyi9qm7ry8

Most of the population is Bantu...with quite a few indigenous pygmies which an observer commented

They (The Bantu) keep them almost like pets.

Which I found somewhat shocking.

The truth more shocking yet, is the realization that the Bantu actually keep them more like household slaves...and children born to them are born into this servitude.

Most are under 5 feet tall when fully grown. Some are much much smaller.

Christianity is the major religion in The Congo and the people are predominantly Catholics.

French is the country's official language.

When we join again we will check out the Congo River.

Until then...

Juneteenth...Birthday Brunch with Brenda...Storms & More

Busy week, this...as the Supreme Court has once again upheld the ACA...President Biden has returned from a successful meeting with world leaders...he and his wife representing America on the world stage once again without faux pas or the embarrassment that was the prior four years...and today has finally become an official federal holiday.

Celebrated in Texas for over a decade...now celebrated nationwide.

Progress.

Earlier this week celebrating Brenda's 67th birthday with homemade lasagna...sliced tomatoes with basil...garlic bread and a slice of New York Style cheesecake with warm praline topping.  Chat and lotions and potions. It was a wonderful afternoon!

John sent these images from his pond this week...where they have been fishing and even caught a few!

Momma and Daddy- and the 8 goslings!

Marsha and a friend...we will call her Jane.

Marsha and John..and Jane.

...in true guy fashion...he remarked...maybe it is a threesome ???...

And an adorable little guy that Angie babysat for her friend Sue after she rescued him...at The Shoppe.

Meet Sam.

Tiny and snuggly and cute!

Touching base with everyone after last night's fierce storms...

Hail in New Palestine Indiana.

James sent photos of 3" hail in Cloverdale.

Tina reports that the chicken yard is 2.5" of mud and they are spreading straw.

It stormed here all night long with high winds and a deluge of rain...although no real damage...it completely wiped out every flower I had budded or bloomed. Including the lilies who had survived flooding and a late late snow.

Gone.

They just weren't meant to be, I guess.

I will replant the tub soon.

There are supposed to be more strong storms arrive tonight.

Pretty sure Lennon will be getting blowback from the tropical storm that just made landfall in the Gulf...but not a lot.

Chris came by Thursday to show me his newest guitar

The Bride

A Brand New Genuine Fender Strat from California.

...registered and Certificate of Authenticity...

Traded off  his Martin and another electric guitar for it.

It's just beautiful!

No new film this week...and a re-read of a John Green novel I particularly liked

Although the statement means a state of infinite regression...the book is a wonderfully poignant story set in Indiana of a girl living with OCD.

And its affect on everything in her life...from friendships...personal...and her romantic relationship.

Aza's type of OCD is Contamination/Intrusive Thoughts.

Of the four classifications:

Contamination

Intrusive or Taboo Thoughts

Doubt and Self Harm

Symmetry and Arranging

This would seem the most difficult for adaptation.

Where most of us enjoy a kiss...she is disgusted and thinking of the microbes now teeming/invading her mouth.

Where we enjoy a good meal she is focused on the food now decomposing in her gut.

A story within a story, well told by this Indiana author.

If you haven't read it...try it...you might like it.

 Have a relaxing weekend!

Virtual Africa: Finishing Tanzania...Zanzibar and the Coast

Just when you think
Tanzania
can't possibly get any better.

It Does.

Today we will virtually explore
the coastline
including Zanzibar.

Come Along!

Zanzibar is one of the larger islands
off of Tanzania.
One of several in the archipelago.

Which looks like this

from the air.

Located in the Indian Ocean
about
15 miles from the Mainland.

These are spice producing islands
and provide
cloves
cinnamon
nutmeg
and
black pepper
for export.

They are referred to
as
The Spice Islands

They have
five ports
and an airport.

Tourism is huge here
and it is not unusual
to see
1.5 million
tourists
per year.

Aren't you
glad this is
virtual?

They even have
their own leopards.

Rare
Zanzibar Leopard

The name
Zanzibar is
Arabic
and means

The Black Coast.

Like a great deal
of
Africa
these islands have been under
Arabic
Portuguese &
British
rule

Most of the
inhabitants
are from
Bantu
origin
and speak
Swahili
and English.

Zanzibar is
primarily Muslim.

The average income
is 2,500 USD
annually.

A popular restaurant here
is
The Rock

One of the popular offerings is
Zanzibar  Pizza

Which really isn't...

Much like Rissoles these are basically pockets of dough filled with vegetables...sometimes fish or meats...and cheese.

All this, and perfect white sand beaches!

                                                  What's not to love!!!

Next week we will move on to Congo.

Until then...

Virtual Africa: Tingatinga Style Painting...and Mbege

About Mbege...

Poured mine off Sunday and let it chill.

Birdseed beer.

Bleah...really really bleah.

Nice banana after taste, though.

Next time I'll just feed the millet to the birds and eat a banana or two, okay.

Not recommended.

But at least I've tried the stuff.

Today's adventure is Tingatinga Style Painting.

This began in 1968 with Edward Tingatinga in Tanzania...he later started his own school of art teaching locals the unique style. Dying in 1972 he personally created a very small body of original art and these are sought after by collectors.

Edward Tingatinga

Examples of Original Tingatinga Art

The first Tingatinga paintings were done on masonite with bicycle paint due to the cheapness and availability of both.

These were routinely sold to the tourists...and have been referred to as airport art.

By the 1990's artists were taking the Tingatinga style and embellishing on it...making it their own.

1990-current Tingatinga style

The style itself is bright colors and simplistic one dimensional animals, people or other elements of Africa.

Basic and often cartoonish.
