Virgil (Vergil)...his Poetry and Tomb...and a bit of shopping in (online) Naples

Virgil was one of the most renowned poets of Rome. Born Publius Vergilius Maro in the year 70 B.C his works included several volumes of poetry and his magnum opus: The Aeneid. Commissioner by Augustus, The Aeneid was to be the story of the greatness of Rome in prose.

His poetry can be read here:

and the full (transcribed) Aeneid here

Personally, he wasn't my "cup of tea". I found him to be flowery, verbose, and perhaps a bit too enhanced by the goings-on of female goats. But it may just be me...see for yourself.

Anyway, Augustus loved him. Although Virgil died before the completion of The Aeneid and had requested the entire manuscript burned  (no computers or delete an entire manuscript in a single keystroke like today, or The Aeneid may have died with him)  Augustus preserved it and it is considered Virgil's most important historical work.

When Virgil died he had requested his ashes be returned to Naples.

Virgil's Tomb

His tomb is now a place that locals bestow magical properties on...tales of inspiration, knowledge and healing...obviously, it is a common tourist attraction.

Mantua me genuit, Calabri rapuere, tenet nunc Parthenope; cecini pascua, rura, duces.
(Mantua gave me birth; Calabria took me away; and now Parthenope holds me: I sang of pastures, farms, leaders.)   Virgil’s Epitaph

Later, Joseph Wright of Derby, would immortalize the tomb in his painting of it

And because this is the 21st Century...now the imagine exists on everything in the area...mugs...mouse-pads...even tee-shirts
