The Riddle of Home...

Mayes' final chapter in our Year in the World. She muses that when she finishes her travels she will open The Yellow Cafe in Georgia. The State where she was born, and grew up as a child.

Never mind Thomas Wolfe's admonishment about not being able to return there...or Frost reminding it is where- "when we go, they have to take us in".

So, December,  a month many (certainly myself included) associate with closeness and sharing, family and friends, gathering and remembering, rituals and traditions.

Perhaps that is why Home (or the concept of home) is such an amorphous thing.

My definition of home...my feelings...my memories...the sights, sounds, smells...concept...that mean HOME to me may be 180 degrees different than yours...and ours, completely different than the person down the street.

I have seen people in life who were literally house-less...but carried their HOME inside them...and I have seen people who lived in what most of us would refer to as a mansion that were "homeless" despite their extravagant abode. You can certainly have a house and still be home-less.

This month we will discover:

Home as a Structure.

Home as a Concept.

Home as a Person or People.

Home as Tradition or Ritual.

Home and Routine.

Home as Food.

Home as a Smell.

Home Sounds.

Home as a Geographical Location.

Home Sights and Familiar Objects (the stuff).

Home as Memories

Home as a Beginning.

Home as an Ending...(or as Mayes describes it)

"Looking for the Square Root of Light".
