Since today is Fat Tuesday I thought it would be perfect for a virtual adventure!
So as they say in The Quarter
"laissez le bon temps rouler" (let the good times roll)
and let us begin!
Beginning on the Feast of the Three Kings (Epiphany) and continuing until the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is basically a time of excesses, including eating rich fatty food, just before the Fasting of Lent.
Makes perfect sense.
(...my friend Brenda, and I- are waiting for Diane to make it home from Orlando, so our celebration will be a week late this year...)
The costumes, floats and krewes that accompany the floats meander loudly down the narrow streets of the Quarter flinging candy, plastic coins and throws (beads)
Music and celebration in the air.
Also the smell of beignets, muffalettas, po' boy sandwiches of all kinds, deep fried everything, rum and other alcoholic drinks and ettouffee.

And, then there is the King's Cake
Decorated with purple, green and gold sanding sugar, throws and plastic coins...with a tiny figurine baby Jesus baked inside.
Tradition says that whoever gets the baby in their slice of King's Cake has to bake the cake for next year's party!
