Virtual Belize: Caye Caulker

This tiny caye off the coast of Belize is only 5 miles long by 1 mile wide.

A channel divides a beach and pub at one end. The channel is known as The Split.

The colorful town on the island is known as Caye Caulker Village.

Filled with building of hot pink, sunny yellow, lime green and tropical blue...what was once a sleepy fishing village has re-imaged itself and its primary interests now are e eco-tourism.

Caye Caulker sits on an underwater cave known as Giant Cave.

Let's go see...

And it is HUGE...underlying a great deal of the Island. Giant Cave is noted as one of the largest marine caves in the world.

It is filled with hidden chambers and stalagmites, stalactites and columns.

Perhaps the most incredible moment  (for me) is when you realize that all three only form when conditions are dry...in open air.

This was all (and was for a long long long long time)  above sea level.

When the sea level rose the caves were submersed.

Whether it is golfing, diving at Hol Chan's, snorkeling The Split then having a drink at Split Bar, enjoying a massage and spa day in the village or simply relaxing in one of the many colorful hammocks on the beach...Caye Caulker has something for everyone!

I've been looking for a beach to paint for my Cayes Adventure
