Virtual Islands: Jan Mayen

A Norwegian Island in the Arctic Sea???

Are you effing kidding me???

(...now we know why nobody ever let Roger Lovegrove plan family vacations...)

The weather station on Jan Mayan says it is a balmy 9 degrees there right now.

Yes...won't be needing the bikini or sunblock here either.

Lovegrove had strange ideas when it came to Islands, I guess.

I prefer mine with 85 degree days, sunshine, sandy beaches and umbrella drinks.

 But here we are.

sigh

Let's take a (cold) look around.

It is 34 miles long...connected in two parts by an isthmus and around a volcano.

But what you will notice immediately (besides the mind-numbing cold) is the starkness. The black and white of this place.

Black volcanic rock.

White glaciers.

Eighteen people call this inhospitable rock home.  All of them work in some capacity for the Norwegian Service, or the Meteorological Society.

Gravel for Norway is it's only resource.

With the exception of sea birds who use it as a breeding ground in the summer months...nothing lives here.

(...remind me why we are on this godforsaken spit of land again...)

It's highest temperature is 43 in August to -6 in February.

In the Summer Month of August...a slight mossy green tinge colors the landscape.

Then by September or October, things return to black and white.

So yeah...it is easy to see why the tourists aren't clamoring to this far flung island.

Including us.

Hope the next island is better...but won't be spending any more time i n this desolate place.

Next up:

Mykines

See you there!

And....Indiana is CLOSED.

So is most of the United States...and a lot of the rest of the World.

Oh...you're all looking around yourselves now, eh?

I guess you have already noticed that there isn't any toilet paper...or Kleenex...or hand sanitizer...or wipes.

And it is sad to see the realization on the faces of those who really really did believe that this was not true...just a hoax..not a big deal...when they face the reality that it is a HUGE deal. Is very much real...and is now actually affecting them and their everyday lives.

I get the chaos and panic and the runs on gun stores.

I really do.

They have been repeatedly lied to...they are scared...this is "end times" for some of them.

I get it.

Now we all have to be prepared, but not hoard or panic.

If firearm ownership makes you feel safer...fine...but let's not go crazy, people.

(...I've seen the lines...)

and yes...I know this is "Murica"...but the quarantines, closed businesses and limited hours are not to "...take away your rights...", people.  They are hopefully going to help limit this pandemic. Help slow down community spread. Help our healthcare system and hospitals not to be overwhelmed and force the triage we are seeing happen in Italy right now. Where doctors have to make the decision who gets care and who gets gurney'd out in the hallway to die.

Save lives.

Slow down the panic buying of the past week.

Nobody needs THAT many rolls of toilet paper, okay.

(...but Halloween next year should rock!)

Combining my self-isolation with Spring cleaning and a few projects I have needed to get done...and never made the time.

It is kind of relaxing.

Peaceful.

This is
Day 6 for me.

Some of us saw this coming early on...and prepared. At present I could go at least 2 months without having to leave my house or do without.

At the end of the month I'll replenish anything I have used/need.
Insta-Cart is awesome.

Our restaurants, bars, gyms, casinos, libraries, schools, et al are closed. Carry out and delivery food is still available in a limited fashion.

For those who are still using the talking points of this being no worse than the cold or a flu...I want to explain the difference to you...

This is Covid-19.

You know how easily transmitted a cold is...how it seems once someone you know gets one...everybody has it?

(....parents of school age children are intimately familiar with this concept...)

Well this spreads just like that...so easily transmitted...from droplets...off surfaces...everywhere...

But it is unlike the flu in that the mortality rate is from 10-30% higher.

And here is why...

The common flu virus stays basically in our upper respiratory system.

We have developed over many years (and maybe many vaccines) a kind of herd immunity to them. Our body recognizes them and begins the fight with pre-existing antigens/antibodies as soon as they arrive.  Most of us don't even know the battle has been fought.

Some will develop symptoms during this battle. We call that

Getting the Flu

and will feel horrible as their body fights it off.

Still a great many will lose the battle- and die every year.

Despite our vaccines and antigens/antibodies .

Despite our medical care.

Now, let me explain how Covid-19 is different than The Flu.

Remember those receptors?

The little things sticking out a bit like broccoli florets all over our ball...

With Covid-19 the receptors do not attach themselves in the upper airway.

They slip like a key in a lock into our lower lungs...and attach there...

Since this is a new virus we have no natural built up immunity and there is no vaccine...so our body (lower lungs) views this as an intruder to be violently attacked...it literally does not know what to do with it..so it throws everything it has...a cascade...hence the high fevers...the fluid from the immune response gathering in the lower lungs and inflammation...eventual pneumonia.

This is why it is most deadly in the elderly...those with pre-existing conditions...and the immuno-compromised...but has also killed those from the recent death of a 21 year old soccer player in Spain to many 30-40 year old smokers...and seemingly healthy 40-50 year old doctors and nurses.

The only demographic that seems to be fairly unaffected by this virus is young children 1-9 years old.

Perhaps their lungs are stronger/less scarred?

The global mortality rate seems to be around 3.4% right now...given the current numbers,

*the common flu mortality rate is about .01%
Last year nearly 34,000 died of it.

It is easy to disregard things that are new...not understood well..downplayed.

Often these things are mocked or as we have seen in the months leading up to this...misinformation spread.

This is something that came out recently...and perhaps the best I have seen since the closing of practically everything:

https://www.cnn.com/videos/us/2020/03/17/closing-argument-war-against-coronavirus-cpt-vpx.cnn

And every one is getting it now...Tom Hanks...Rita Wilson...Edris Elba.

(...rumor has it that Chuck Norris came in contact with it....and now the virus is in quarantine for 14 days...)

From this

to this- Worldwide

In a little over 1 month.

Don't Panic...Be Prepared.

Stay Home &
                   Stay Safe...

This Week... Mall-Ratting Bloomington...and COVID-19

I guess I should preface this entry by saying...yes..I am sick...and no..I don't think it is our new plague...and yes...I am quarantining, anyway, until I am sure.
Being an introvert with short bursts of sociability this is more like a vacation from people.
Which is fine.

Our county isn't testing yet, anyway...(and Indiana Department of Health has only tested 85 people total) for the entire state.

Proof if you do not test...your numbers stay low...

SMH!

And since I am (and my friends) are all in the 60 or over, pre-existing conditions, high-risk category...it just isn't worth the chance of spreading it.

At this point it is much more like a bad cold.

Hopefully, a bad cold.

There is Facebook and The Phone and Email to keep in touch.

James and Nicole and The Grands have been/are sick.

Chris and Tina are fine.

Lennon is still fine.

And John is healthy and sent photos of the Kroger Shelves near his house.

Yeah...good times.

sigh

Checked with the kids and John...who have pretty much supplied up, and I have about a month's essentials on hand.
Going to add to it by the end of the month.
Insta-Cart is amazing.

Even those who were sure this was all a "Democratic Hoax" are noticing that
the schools/colleges are closing and going to e-learning...flights are cancelled...most of Europe is closed...Disneyland and Disney World is closed...Churches in ITALY have closed  (...they didn't even close for the World Wars or Black Plague, okay?) NHL...NBL...NBA and March Madness...even talk of the Olympics...the St.Paddy's Celebrations...The Easter Services...The Boston Marathon...either rescheduled or stopped altogether. They've cancelled Coachella, for godsake!!!

Coachella.

The emptiness is eerie.

Yes, this is serious.

At last, WHO has classified this as a pandemic.

In one week we have went from this:

to this:

Although a better up-to-the-minute case breakdown can be found here.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

I have to admit I like the John Hopkins site for the "Plague Inc"  look.

World Edition 2020

Yeah, how sick is that???

This explains the differences between Covid-19 and the flu-

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/14/health/coronavirus-covid-19-flu-comparison-frieden-analysis/index.html

We are all hunkered down though...ready to ride it out.

And staying away from the crazy people...

People fighting over hand sanitizer, wipes and toilet paper.

Snatching the last loaves of bread from the shelves.

Angie even related the story of a man in Tennessee stabbed over bottled water.

Panicked people are dangerous.

(...be prepared..not panicked...)

Earlier (before I got sick) was nice.

Brenda, Diane, Eleanor and even Gail (!) converged on Bloomington College  Mall...plundered sales and stores...and checked out new scents at Bath and Body...(where they were also out of those tiny hand-bacs...not one in the entire store)...had Chinese Stir Fry and Bourbon Chicken...and just enjoyed shopping and chat!

Snagged a photo of my grand-daughter, Emma, who is learning to tattoo...and what perfect parents to have.

"I'm a coloring book, now!"   ~James

Angie is getting her Shoppe decorated for SPRING & it is coming along nicely...

So, all it not coughing and sneezing and doom and gloom...lol.

I can't wait to feel better, and start planting a few things!

Stay Healthy & Safe

Love,

Carla

Virtual Islands: Graciosa

Good Morning...

Today we are (virtually) off to the second island in our adventure.

We will follow Lovegrove's adventures and visit Graciosa, just off Portugal.

Okay...this is a bit more like it.

In fact this will do quite nicely.

The name means graceful or enchanting island in Portuguese. And from everything I've seen so far...it is.

It is also referred to as White Island and is located in the Azores.

Where the Azores are located on the World Map.

Just so we are all in the same general area.

Graciosa is 6.2 miles long and 4.3 miles wide and is a volcanic island.

Subject to earthquakes and not densely populated. Around 4800 people.

At least this island sports a couple proper beaches...and no Musk-oxen or Polar Bears.

(...A nice change from Wrangel....)

The temperature is mid-60's, currently, but promises to be in the 70's by noon.

The populated area seems to be clean and compact.

The Lighthouse

One of the fascinating additions to this island may be the bullfighting arena that they have built in the middle of the extinct volcano crater.

Creative use of space.

(..plus..as we learned, In Portugal...they don't KILL the bulls here...)

Tour of Graciosa

Diving, sailing, exploring the depths of volcanic caves, hiking and bicycling...Graciosa seemly has a little something for everyone!

And Queijadas...a Graciosa Specialty

and the recipe:

https://easyportugueserecipes.com/queijadas-da-graciosa/

An egg custard type filling in a pastry tart shell...and sprinkled with cinnamon.
Baked in a cupcake tin.

I may make these this weekend!

Virtual Island Adventures: Wrangel Island

Okay...Roger Lovegrove is a sadistic #$@&, and just what the hell is this???

Yes, we can put away the shorts, flip-flops and shades.

Seriously, Dude???

Our first Island is frozen in the Arctic Ocean just off the shores of Siberia.

And is known as The Polar Bear Nursery.

 Yeah...I'm still in shock, too.

But here we are.
So let's take a (cold) look around.

According to the weather is it a balmy -18 degrees out on Wrangel this morning.

The island is 93 miles long and 50 miles wide.
Rocky and mountainous.

Since its designation as a "ZAPOVEDNIK" or Strict Nature Preserve in 1976 all human activity except scientists has been prohibited. There are 4 Rangers who reside here year-round and a rotating group of 12 scientists who collect research during the summer.

Otherwise- it is the sole home of polar bears, musk-oxen, seals, arctic fox, lemmings, walrus and birds.

With a record high in the deep summer of 64 degrees and average lows around  -26 degrees and windy the rest of the year...there will be no basking here, anytime soon.

Now is probably a good time to mention that this was the place that Woolly Mammoths met with extinction. A smaller dwarfed version...carbon dated to exist until about 2000 BC.

Making them the final existing Woolly Mammoths.

Their last words were probably

"This isn't Tahiti...let me see that map..."

But you do have to hand it to the animals who have managed to call this placed home.

Along with finding some of the skeletal remains of the last mammoths on Earth.

Sometimes in situ...which has to be exciting to discover!

And the Outpost on Wrangel Island

Hoping our NEXT virtual island is a bit more tropical...

Next up:  Graciosa

Now I need a hot bubble bath and a mug of cocoa!!!
