Life List #26: Tree Buddha- Wat Mahathat
I was only a few years in, on the Buddhist Path, the first time I saw this image in a National Geographic.
The shot, by Julian Bound, would be later recognized worldwide as an Iconic representation of Thailand.
Thailand has several of the stone heads situated throughout.
This is the entire shot.
The temple is one hour from Bangkok and was once the capital of the Kingdom of Siam. Built in 1374.
In 1767 the city was destroyed and many artifacts including some of the Buddha heads were buried for safe-keeping.
Although it is not known as a fact...there is speculation that this head may have been buried at the base of the tree and rose in the roots through the centuries.
