Virtual Africa: Finishing Tanzania...Zanzibar and the Coast

Just when you think
Tanzania
can't possibly get any better.

It Does.

Today we will virtually explore
the coastline
including Zanzibar.

Come Along!

Zanzibar is one of the larger islands
off of Tanzania.
One of several in the archipelago.

Which looks like this

from the air.

Located in the Indian Ocean
about
15 miles from the Mainland.

These are spice producing islands
and provide
cloves
cinnamon
nutmeg
and
black pepper
for export.

They are referred to
as
The Spice Islands

They have
five ports
and an airport.

Tourism is huge here
and it is not unusual
to see
1.5 million
tourists
per year.

Aren't you
glad this is
virtual?

They even have
their own leopards.

The name
Zanzibar is
Arabic
and means

The Black Coast.

Like a great deal
of
Africa
these islands have been under
Arabic
Portuguese &
British
rule

Most of the
inhabitants
are from
Bantu
origin
and speak
Swahili
and English.

Zanzibar is
primarily Muslim.

The average income
is 2,500 USD
annually.

A popular restaurant here
is
The Rock

One of the popular offerings is
Zanzibar  Pizza

Which really isn't...

Much like Rissoles these are basically pockets of dough filled with vegetables...sometimes fish or meats...and cheese.
