Virtual Australia: Tangalooma Shipwrecks- Queensland

This caught my eye in a creepy-haunted what-the-hell kind of way.

Today we'll find out with our Virtual Adventure of The Tangalooma Shipwrecks.

Come along!

When I first saw the line of them off the coast I thought to myself

"Bad sailors?"

"Rough weather?"

"Where Things End up from the Bermuda Triangle?"

When I saw the entire map...15 in all.

I was curious.

The real story...not nearly as spooky as my overactive imagination, I'm afraid.

The vessels were purposely sunk here in 1963.

They serve several functions:

The provide a breakwater for the beach and for smaller boats.

They provide a man-made ecosystem for sea-life, habitat and protect the babies as they grow.

They attract tourists who love to snorkel and scuba while exploring them. Although recently a sign has been erected and the tops cut back to discourage people from climbing on them (safety concerns)

They were steam driven dredges and barges no longer in use...brought to this sandbar and sunk.

Deliberately within swimming distance of the beach.

So now we know.

A testament both to man and wildlife...

If you build it (or in this case...sink it)

They Will Come!
