Virtual Day Trip: Antelope Canyon- Page Arizona

In July of 2004 I would (unbeknownst to me at the time) spend my last night camped primitive under the wide sky and stars of the Arizona Desert Hard-Pack.

For those who have never camped primitive on this red clay desert, as romantic as it may sound with the Eagle's "million stars all around"...there are other features they don't share in their song.  Like the number of lizards, scorpions, and snakes who also take advantage of the evening cool after a 114 degree day.  The stickery tumbleweeds (Russian Thistle) and Prickly Pear Cactus Starts (barely thumb size), or tiny rocks that you will inevitably "find" beneath your sleeping bag even though you thought you swept the area thoroughly. And then there is the hard-pack itself. Rust red clay that has been baked beneath the unforgiving Arizona sun until it it exactly like sleeping outside on your concrete patio or garage floor. And the loose sand...blowing into every crack and crevasse- including your own.

Seriously.

Yes....you'll "make love in the desert tonight"...because there is no way in hell you are going to actually sleep out here on the hard-pack.

But, if you look past all the creepy crawlies and slitherers. Ignore the fact you are sleeping on the equivalent of asphalt with thorns. Really focus. You will begin to appreciate the amazing desert-at-night sounds. The fragrant night blooming cactus flowers which quickly shrivel come the light of day. The smell of the  hard-pack itself...like the red clay you used in third grade to make a pinch  pot. And, yes...the perfect black velvet sky without city light pollution, and more stars than you have ever seen in your entire life.

The July Trip was all of that.

My (late) husband- Bill, two of our three boys (Lennon and Chris), three tents and sleeping bags, and a fire built of every bit of combustible brush we could scrounge before dark. The Arizona Desert, which reaches 114 degrees in the daytime, often drops to the 30's and low 40's at night.

The plan was to take them to the rim of The Grand Canyon...then head out the single highway beyond the canyon that (in a few more miles) ends in Page Arizona to explore Antelope Slot Canyons.

                                                         July 2004

We woke early and were treated to another sight I will never forget.

Some yuppies who had also pulled off to "camp" in their Winnebago (or some such behemoth) and a woman (also up early) had her tiny teacup white poodle on a thin pink leash...and an even tinier bedazzled jewel pink collar...out for a morning walk.

On the clay-dusted hard-pack.

The longer the poor beast walked...the PINKER it became. By the time she looped back to the motor home- both the dog and the lower 1/4 of her legs were clay pink.

"Honey...the dog's gone pink."

Bill and I pulled our head back into the relative privacy of our tent and laughed until we literally cried.

---maybe you had to be there...

But I digress.

The above picture from that trip shows WHY we never made it through the Slot Canyons.

Midday the storm on the horizon became a full-fledged gully washer and so...no Slot Canyons for us.

I have always been in awe of photographs of Antelope Canyon...and although my Virtual Long Distance Travel is over for the year decided that I will from now to January take a few Virtual Day Trips to places and things I have otherwise missed along the way.

So that is why we are Virtually Exploring The Antelope Slot Canyons, today.

Come along!

Antelope Canyons are located in Page on Navajo Reservation land. The road ends at a steel gate and visitors to them are charged a fee and taken down in small groups by Navajo Guides.

The road from the gate to the  Slot Canyons themselves is, unsurprisingly, just more well worn hard-pack. After a hard rain the ersatz road and the area around it becomes a slippery river of...well...clay slip.

The Canyons are divided into two sections

Upper Antelope Canyon

It is basically a walk up canyon. A sandstone slot. Upper Antelope is the site of some of the amazing sunbeam photos as pure white light overhead slips down in shafts and beams.

I have always felt that if one could sit in one of these magical beams...one could be healed of most anything.

The beams begin in March and can usually be seen mid-day until October.

The walls are sandstone which have been carved over the ages by flowing water and you can see the many different layers exposed.  The floor is reddish clay and sand.

Tour of Upper Antelope Canyon

https://youtu.be/PRw422TpXHU

Lower Antelope is altogether different. Much longer, narrower and required long climbs down into the spiralling arches of eroded sandstone. Steel ladders and stairs have replaced hand-built wooden ladders of the 1990's. There are few light beams here.

In 1997 a group of hikers became trapped in a flash flood that raged through Lower Antelope. Eleven were killed. Their guide, the sole survivor. When they had descended into the lower chambers it was a beautiful sunny Arizona day.  A downpour from several miles away rushed through the sandstone slots and swept them away. If there is rain...even in the surrounding areas...the slot canyons are not safe.

Especially the lower chambers.

The Lower Canyon Tour

To appreciate the magnitude of a Flash Flood in the Slot Canyons...some footage of one

Flash Flood in the Slot Canyons

https://youtu.be/zDP2YTpznq4

This footage really opened my eyes to how horrific getting caught in one of these really would be...not just rushing water...but what amounts to thousands and thousands of gallons of thick clay slip rushing towards you and engulfing you.

And yet...still...one of the most beautiful places on (or beneath) Earth.

Ordered a souvenir prior to today's Virtual Tour which arrived Saturday

A Navajo Hand Carved Picture Sandstone (Sculpture) from Page.

A tiny bit of the same sandstone of which Antelope Canyon is made.

It's Been a Long MONTH this Week...

And a month later- it has happened AGAIN.

This time at a small church in Texas.

A family dispute...that left 26 dead.

And before they even had the blood wiped up, Paul Ryan was sending

"Thoughts and Prayers"

and Donald Trump was sending

"Thoughts and Prayers"

and telling us that this wasn't a GUN issue....this was a Mental Health issue.

Which seemed fairly ironic, since earlier this year he rolled back legislation passed by President Obama regulating patients with mental health issues from acquiring weapons.

Jesus Wept.

And I am thinking

"They were in a damned church...okay....maybe prayers really don't STOP bullets."

So I really hope their thoughts and prayers involve sane gun legislation SOON.

(...I wouldn't hold my breath...)

Another massacre with an assault weapon.

Even the freaking Pentagon issued a statement that Civilians do not need AR's, this time.

Here are some suggestions:

Treat guns like cars.
Mandatory licenses
License renewals
Mandatory training
Mandatory insurance
Operating laws
Operating age limits
Restrict some models
Require safety inspections
Mandatory registration
Background checks

Ban AR's for Civilian Sale

Initiate Federal Buy Back Program

Close the Gunshow Loophole

Stiffer Penalties for Crimes Committed with Guns and Removal of Guns used in Crimes from Circulation.

Will it stop ALL gun related crime?  No

But it is a START.

(..or we could do nothing...like we have been doing for years now...because THAT is working out so well...)

In other news...joining the ranks of Weinstein and Louis...Actor Kevin Spacey accused first by a man who claimed Spacey made inappropriate advances to him when he was 14 years old...and then a line formed, of others, making similar claims. His publicist (before quitting) did release a statement that Spacey is now in treatment for his sexual behaviors) Although I have always liked him as an actor...it would seem he is lacking as a human being. I am glad someone spoke out. Like Weinstein and Louis, this looks as though it may be a sad end to an otherwise outstanding career.

Unless, of course, you are Alabama GOP Candidate Roy Moore...who also got outed this week for improper sexual advances on 4 (to date) under age girls. The youngest sadly also 14.

Then the GOP (...to be fair..some of the GOP...not all) and Faux News will defend you using examples of

Joseph, Mary and the  Baby Jesus.

(....seriously..WTF is wrong with you guys??...)

It was Consensual.

(...Sean Hannity...)

It is a Left Wing Conspiracy.

et al...

So Alabama on December 12th you have a choice

Doug Jones who actually prosecuted the members of the KKK who bombed a church and killed 4 little girls.

or

Roy Moore who stands accused of diddling 4 little girls.

Your Call.

It hasn't ALL been bad news this week, though.

On Election Day (Tuesday) in several states the GOP was hit by a building-in-strength BIG BLUE WAVE

 It was AMAZING.

We flipped 14 elections!

The biggest and best being Virginia.

That night, and the next morning, the return of HOPE and the feeling of being able to do something about Trump, his Administration and this Congress was tangible.  Drop by drop...state by state...county by county...local race by race...we are gathering. Little blue droplets.

By November 2018 we will be a Tsunami!

Chris and Ashley (A friend of mine...Kara's...daughter who I have watched grow up) married at Turkey Run and are now honeymooning in Hawaii!

                                            CONGRATULATIONS!

James & Nicole are celebrating their 4th Anniversary tomorrow!

                                                         Soul Mates
Chris and Lennon, with exciting news this week, too. Both are buying 2017 Toyota Corollas before the end of the year.

Lennon is looking at a blue one, and Chris has his eye on a burgundy one that he may be driving home as early as the end of next week.

"It only has 20 miles on it, Mom!"

Needless to say they are both pretty happy guys!

This week's book...the newly released John Green (the fault is in our stars author) Turtles All The Way Down.

A novel delving into parental loss, coming of age and mental illness. Specifically coming of age while attempting to live with/deal with mental illness. Green has a way of slipping you beneath the very skin of his well developed characters, and letting you experience the world through their eyes. As well as being one of my favorite Indiana writers.

This book also set throughout Indianapolis.

Another best-seller, I'm thinking!

Enjoyable read.

This week's movie:  Thor:Ragnarok

Delightfully funny scenes between Thor and Loki. Anthony Hopkins back as Odin. The arrival of their sister Hella (Death). Jeff Goldblum as The GrandMaster  (...although he is still Ian from JP...lol). A lot of action but you will LOVE the humor in this Marvel Masterpiece.

Maybe  not the Movie of the Year...but definitely the Movie of the Season.  Well worth your time!

Used this photo (taken during a trek with Chris to Edna Hall Woods several years back...where I hung and photographed this little red Christmas ball everywhere)...as my Holiday Card image for 2017

and working to finish a Fall Painting I have started (...before the snow falls and I shelve it until next year...)

Winter just around the corner, now.  Shallow water in the trough is topped with ice. Most of the red, orange and yellow leaves are now brown or lay curled on the lawn.

Today a Cinderella Day, here.  Dust, Scrub, Launder, Wash, Cook and Organize.

In preparation for Sunday's Zen.

Sunday's ZEN

After many many years, have finally managed to turn Sunday into a personal Mini-Zen Retreat weekly.  I even pull off that day of silence occasionally.  It annoys the Shelby-Cat...lol

She is very chatty...and can't seem to understand why if you aren't talking back to her.

Sunday looks a lot like this now:

Meditation

Exercise/Yoga

Morning Tea or Coffee (usually with Facebook)

A Big Country Breakfast

Journalling

Reading

Meditation

Nap (usually with the Shelby-Cat)

Sunday Dinner (mid-afternoon "Heavy Like Grandma Used to Make" with a nice dessert)

Creating   (with clay...paint...writing/blogging...a virtual mini-adventure ...cooking or crafts)

Outside (playing in the plants..weather permitting...walking or just sitting outside a while)

Journalling

Reading

Exercise

Spa Bath (candlelight, salts, scented oils, bubbles and lotions)

Meditation

Herbal Tea & Bed

Differing from an away retreat as, obviously, I still enjoy a little of the connectivity of the computerized age with my morning cup...and do not forego caffeine.

You would not like me Decaffeinated.

Also different, as I eat relatively healthy all week...so Sunday Foods are all about Comfort and Filling.  Satisfied. Satiated.  Happy.

I do take a break from the World News...trust me...it will STILL be there tomorrow. I do turn off the phone. I finish all housework on Saturday, but the dishes I use during the day, Sunday- and wash them immediately after using them.

I usually stay in silk pajamas...although I have been known to throw on a stand of pearls and (maybe) perfume with them.
Sunday is definitely a Bra-Free Zone.

I find it is the perfect way to relax and start the new week.

Refreshed,Relaxed and Organized.

Halloween...November...Geostorm...Book Review...and Other Things

Or as Aiden sung most of the night

"This is Halloween..Halloween...Halloween!"
(ala The Nightmare Before Christmas)

A wonderful night! With Brenden as The Scream...Hannah as The Zombie Prom Queen...Emma as a Gypsy and Aiden hamming it up as Ironman.

Nicole and I.

Amazing dinner...a zillion trick or treaters...and no snow this year (which was a plus) although it was still plenty cold!

Still nibbling on Shel's Nutter-Butter Mummies and Chocolate Dipped Pretzels. Pinterest is a wonderful thing!

So good with hot tea!

Now it's

and the leaves seem to have browned overnight. Everything falling in earnst now...and the cold mornings and nights to remind us that Winter is Coming.

The frost is no longer just on the pumpkin.  The pumpkin is frozen to the patio.

Enjoyed

the other night.

The very opening (...even for me...and I believe in Global Warming...) seemed a bit preachy, but stick around past it...trust me.

Basically a "what happens when global weather control falls into the wrong hands" (...played with resounding evil and very convincingly by Ed Harris...) where it becomes weaponized.

Excellent Film!

A MUST SEE.

This week's book

is also an ODD and (in some circles) unpopular book about mass extinctions, adaptation and the continuation of evolution today.

Very well researched and straight-forward it offers another perspective on current species extinction...and will give you something to think about for a long long time.

Interesting theories.

Well worth the read.

After a blockbuster start to the week with Mueller's twin indictments...the second shoe finally dropped

and it is HUGE.

It seems George Papadopolous has been running amongst the Washington Set (READ:Trump Administration) wired for sound...for THREE months.

OMFG!

Can you even imagine.

Mueller has set up a website so we can see indictments and charges as they happen

https://www.justice.gov/sco

and reportedly there are 4 new sealed indictments coming soon

My money is on Flynn, Kushner, Carter Page, and maybe even Sessions.

We will see.

It is sad when there are so many in one Administration worthy of Indictment that you literally have to GUESS who the next batch will be...and may be completely wrong.

This week's Polar Facepalm

Goes to General John Kelly...for his statement concerning Robert Lee and the Confederacy.

Calling Bobby Lee an "Honorable Man" and the Civil War just "A Failure in Negotiations"

...seriously???? Because I am thinking there was probably a whole bunch of SLAVES at that time who probably had a completely different take on the entire affair...and I am not sure that succession and treason to your country makes you so honorable...maybe it is just me.

WTH???

And the bright glimmer of hope through it all this week

Donald Trump has mentioned 4 times that he may not seek re-election in 2020...if he is THAT wore down already, by the time shit gets REALLY REAL he  will probably RESIGN.

That is my HAPPY THOUGHT!

Happy Indictment Day!!!

Yes folks...it is time to play Indictment Bingo!

This might be the BEST Monday...EVER!

Woke up after a late night (...Indictment Eve Party...) celebrations to this

Gates and Manafort (chalk another one up for Miz Cleo) Indicted and Arrested...immediately prompting

The Happy Happy Joy Joy Song

and then...almost like Christmas in October...it got better.

George "Squeal like a Pig" Papadopoulous immediately took a Guilty Plea  and has been talking....and talking....and talking...ever since!

Three Down and so many left to go.

You have to hand it to them...Republicans are fairly predictable.

First they deny it.

Then they get angry about it.

Then they try to deflect, distract and blame something or someone else.

And when all that fails and the shit is STILL hitting the fan...they begin to eat their own.

Every time.

Anyway,

and this week is going to be one hell of a show.

With Trump on Twitter this morning with CAPS LOCK firmly on tweeting

...NO COLLUSION...

Sorry, Orange Man.

Real News.  Real Indictments. Real Handcuffs.
(You're) Real Screwed.

Caps Lock won't change that.

And for those who shrieked that Podesta (DEM) was going down too...

"Good"

He deserves to.

See- that is the difference between rational people and Trumpers. We don't cling loyally to those who try to subvert the US Constitution...no matter which party they are in.

Ya'll might want to take notes.

And speaking of Unconstitutional...they ruled today that the transgender ban in the US Military that Trump tried to push through was unequivocally UNCONSTITUTIONAL and therefore null and void.

Yeah...it has been a Great Day for The United States,American Citizens and The American Justice System!

Viva la resistance...

Cinderella Day...Getting Ready for Halloween...New Floor...The Hemingway Bio and More

Decided against the Crazy Cat Lady costume as soon as I spotted the Sugar Skull mask!  Even found sugar skull treat bags! Looking forward to James and Nicole's Annual Halloween Chili Supper with everyone!

Loved a recent picture of Emma (Tina's Niece) and she will be a "Halloweenie" This year.

Chris found one of the blow up Stay Puf Marshmallow Guy costumes (...think Ghostbusters...)

and Tina is Robin...although this year she will be on an ambulance crew for Halloween proper.

Bagging candy for the kids...and Tina and Kimber...Spring bulbs for Nicole...and a bottle of Guinness (each) for the guys.

So happy. Tomorrow (with Pizza and good beer) James will be over to finish out my kitchen tile. Soon it will match the bathroom.

Tah Dah!

Thanks to Hurst & Hurst  (Hannah and James) I now have

And no more ghastly white tile for me again. EVER.

Love the Oak grain and it adds so much to the warm feel of home!

Finishing out the living room (a family picture corner..more greenery...dimmer switches) soon...and then going to devote next year to making my bedroom exactly how I have always envisioned...and then it will be done.

Finished another project (early) for the year...wrote the very last pages of  my fiction novel The Plan...finally. The rough draft is complete. Next year is all about editing and hope to have a bit to circulate with query letters by January 2019.

Cinderella Day here. Scrub, Dust, Launder, Tidy, Wash...and cleaning the fridge...bleah. Getting a new seal Monday, so it seemed the opportune time. Besides I have all these Spring bulbs...so I am going to wrap quite a few in newspaper to stow in the crisper and force in Spring.  Early color. (...and pollen allergies...lol)

Coffee with Loretta and Judy this week...and discussing our Mall Rat for November. Since I now have the wheelchair...may be trying Greenwood again.

If so...Applebees has one of these with my name on it!

Their Signature Steak and Garlic Shrimp with Parmesan Sauce.

Finally reached the front of the queue and have now read the newest Ernest Hemingway Biography by Mary V. Dearborn.

Technically, a well researched and annotated piece of work. But it read like an expose'. There is a fine line between telling the story of a great (but troubled) man's life and the oooh and ahhh of tabloid crap. Fairly disappointing. As well as writing about his great body of work...she also seem to delight rooting around in his four failed marriages and going into great detail about his physical and mental decline by the end.

There was more than one moment of

"Why am I STILL reading this???"

If you enjoy Hemingway's writing...this is definitely a book to be avoided.

I did enjoy a nice bit of cinema this week with

A Summer Release that I have kind of actively avoided not knowing that Kevin Spacey was a major character in it.

A pleasant surprise.

If you haven't seen it yet...try it. You'll like it!

And in today's political news...

That's Right...It's Mueller Time!!!!!!

Gives me hope.

The first indictment and arrest could come as early as Monday.

Miz Cleo sez maybe Paul Manafort...but we will see.

All I want for Christmas is The Donald to Resign, Be Impeached or led off in handcuffs...

Is THAT too much to ask?

Donald didn't make this week's facepalm, though. And lord knows he tried.

 No...this week's FACEPALM

goes to Americans Everywhere...that is right...all of us...

Because less than 3 full weeks after the worst mass shooting EVER on American Soil...

We are back to business as usual. It is out of the news. Congress is backing off any new gun regulations...bump stocks have become a punch line...and

WE DIDN'T CHANGE A DAMNED THING.

And we won't.

Because 'MERICA.

(shaking my head)

So don't act all surprised the next time it happens....again.

Tina watching Stay Puf Muscle Man Poses!

He answered the door to the pizza delivery guy dressed like this...lmao!
I may never get  pizza delivery here again.

More anon...

It is days like today that I realize (again)  how truly blessed I am, and what wonderful kids I have.
