August Arrives...Patio Gardens and Rain...Cat Nests and More

Yeah...how the HELL is it August already???

This Covid-Year is passing in a blur, it seems.

A year of no car shows, no movies, no sports, no concerts,  no sit down restaurants, no (or few) family gatherings, limited friend gatherings (...although we did manage Covid-Buddies after a while of everybody being quarantined...) masks, and hand sanitizer and toilet paper shortages...and it has only been about 4 and a half months...

This week...like the beginning sentence of Hemingway's Moveable Feast

"And then, there was the rain."

Every day...and sometimes thunderstorms.

The hard SE Asia deluges...and the gentle patterings...the windswept almost lateral gusts...and the slow lazy plonks of fat drops...last night going to sleep with the sound of a steady soaking outside.

My patio garden and borders couldn't be happier.

Sofi is less thrilled...and has built cats nests to pass the hours.

This is her second...and she appears fairly happy with herself.

Let me explain.

In my bedroom corner...on top of a stack of large boxes she found my silver gray fuzzy "woobie"...by the next morning she had carved out a bowl shaped cat nest and was laying comfortably in it.

Because it was perfect for her to sun herself by the window...and she had worked so hard on it...

And basically because my cat is spoiled rotten

I gave her the "woobie"...did not disturb her nest...and on my next shopping day out bought another super-soft throw for me.

Yeah...right.

(You see where this is headed)

Yesterday it rained again...all day...by the end of the rainy day a second NEST had been carved out of my new throw...on the sofa in my living room.

"What????"
                     ~Sofi

So now I have 2 cat nests...no throw...and no...I won't be getting a third.

She would probably just drag it off to the bathroom and make a third nest out of it, anyway.

~sigh~

Sitting making the Monthly Plan today.

Paid August's Rent..Amber doing the quarterly carpet scrubbing on Monday...Sisters Day on the 15th...Emma's 14th Birthday...Loretta's 79th Birthday...John and I, and Our August Getaway.

...living dangerously this month as we have reserved a room (with a hot tub) again after months and may even do our first dine in since February together...some semblance of normalcy...

Plans contingent on The Rona Situation by then, of course.

And masked!

Now knowing 7 people, personally, that have gotten/have it.

One of whom has died.

Scary stuff.

The most recent Kelly and Joe from the lake...used to be neighbors...now we have all moved...and are still friends.

Luckily all contact before or during has been on Facebook.

No RONA there.

She has it mildly...Joe is very very sick.

Every time they think he is improving, he suffers a setback.

Numbers are on the rise again...so, of course, the kids are GOING BACK TO SCHOOL CLASSROOMS.

What the actual fuck???

Watching this closely.

Hancock County (Greenfield) had its first day of classes back yesterday...also its first verified case of Covid.

I give this spectacularly bad idea about 3 weeks.

And wonder how many kids, teachers, bus drivers, janitors, principals, assistants, lunch ladies, friends and family members will be exposed in that time.

This is why we cannot have nice things, people!

And a laugh out loud moment

because...wouldn't you HAVE to???

(...yes that is Brad Pitt's picture...)

Just to stay sane.

And thinking of the insane...politics this week have been a lot like using a smoker on a bee-hive-

Everything going off so many directions to keep you dazed...confused....befuddled.

Maxwell and Epstein and subpoenas and Dershowitz and Barr and The House...and another Epsteinian Suicide this one in Cali...off the roof of a 27 story building...and Jim Jordan...And Trump...and the upcoming election...and witch-doctor opinions on Covid...and Demon Sex and Alien DNA...

and Trump having a moment of

I Don't Think Anybody Likes Me

...really????

and McConnell realizing the Senate is in jeopardy and had now told at risk senators that they can split from Trump if they wish to save their seats.

Meanwhile we are nearing 18 million Covid cases worldwide with over 650,000 dead and in the US we are now at almost 5 million infected and over 150,000 dead...

But like Herman Cain said

"I'd rather be DEAD than have to wear a mask!"

And so...now he is.

And the Tang-Colored Tyrant Wannabe???

Yeah, he wants to issue an EO to ban TikTok.

Way to prioritize, dude...
and make sure those Gen Z's won't vote for you at the same time.
Mad multi-tasking skills.

You can't make this shit up.

It is exhausting.

But there have been bright moments this week, as well.

Listening to Pres. Obama eulogize John Lewis...and Morgan Freeman read his final essay he left behind.

If you haven't heard the latter

https://youtu.be/_i2DSkAys-8

You must.

My happy thought?

Only 94 more days until the Election.

#VoteBlue2020

So happy to have to have Outreach back.

This Week's Book

The title a rough translation of the Finnish  Kalsarikanni.

Finnish Zen.

It struck me as maybe the perfect read/approach to our current plague.

Humorous and worth a look!

Still waiting on anything new to come out (movie) and settled on a re-watch of
an old film last night.

The Free State of Jones

Very good!

Finishing up my Cinderella Day today (...launder, scrub, dust, polish...) so tomorrow can be a Zen Day.

Have a Wonderful Weekend!

Virtual Botswana: African Skies

Before our virtual journey ends...perhaps the most amazing thing about this place is not the red earth or the endless wildlife...the vast grassland...incredible trees or the open friendly people...but simply the skies.

Kaylee is 15...and the Grands...Big Fish....Demise of an Old Nemesis and the Weekend Update

Kaylee and I finally got to celebrate her 15th over pizza and chat/catch up.

She is getting so grown up.

And we shared her brownies with the rest of the grands and Nicole when they got back from swimming!

Life is good!

Chris is getting ready for his camping trip with the guys soon...and spending a lot of time checking out the lake.

He finally caught this guy!

A largemouth who had been eluding him for some time in a bankside hole in Yellowwood.  He would come out and check  out the bait...Chris would watch him...but never take it.

Not anymore!

And a damned fine fish dinner.

The FAIRIES now relocated to the nearby Glen.

Everything green and growing in the Borders and Patio Garden.

The beginnings of tiny new pink rosebuds.

Everything thriving after the heat, sunshine and rain...

Except poor Medusa.

(...remember the silvery gray spiky floof of a Spanish Lavender...)

It shriveled up into a soggy brown wet ball...and summarily died.

(...I'm melting...what a world...what a world...)

And the death of an old nemesis this week, as well.

It was a relief, quite frankly.

We had an over 20+ year love/hate relationship.

There were times I would check obsessively...daily...although that was quite a while back...

And this ne'er-do-well would be there...mocking me...letting me know how fat I had gotten or in more recent years how many pounds I had put back and needed to adjust.

Who needs that kind of negativity in their life?

Monday, when I gave it its pre-cordial thump...the display window was blank.

I gave it a second.

Just to make sure, you know.

Then a third.

Still nothing.

After years...the bathroom scales were dead.

At first I admit, a bit of panic set in.

"OMG..I must replace them! Immediately!"

Thinking of all the years spent adjusting the numbers up and down.

First too thin.

Then too fat.

Sometimes just right.

(...but is it ever...are we ever???)

Then the slow realization that since 2014 I have been wearing the same size. Have stayed within 5-10 pounds of my target body weight.

And I slid the wretched judgmental thing into the Bin Bag...the way I should have years ago.

It was quite satisfying.

I am sixty.

I will NEVER buy another scale.

EVER.

I will never let myself get horribly overweight again...I'll continue with the 5:2 if I feel my clothing get snug.

But I will never be a number on the scales in the morning...ever again.

And I feel pretty damned great about that!

Still no new film and just did a Friday night re-run...but my library and Outreach Program is back in full swing...and not a moment too soon.

This Week's Book

Man-oh-man have I needed this!!!

(...and you do, too...you just don't know it yet...)

The title coming from the old news axiom

"If it Bleeds...it Leads"

Four short stories.
Unrelated to each other.

Each complete...amazing...significant in their own way.

I have read a lot of King...both of his boys, and even one novel by his wife...but this may be the very best, yet.

He just gets better and better...drawing you into each story with the first paragraph.

A must read for the Stephen King

"Constant Reader"

A bask, a bath, a good nap, and maybe some painting tonight!

Have a Great Weekend!

Virtual Botswana: Night Safari

After the evening fire is extinguished comes the Adventure we have been waiting for-  Night Game Drives.

Simply put...

Night Safari.

Where the night sounds become visible.

And our first visitor is alarmingly nearby!

A jaguar.

Wide awake now, and ready to hunt.

A Serval is also hunting for small game near the camp.

We are treated to not only Ellies in the distance...grouped together for the night...but also a spectacular view of the Milky Way.

The starry skies over this vast grassland is indescribable.

And make me want to paint them!

We pass the earlier pride of lions...now asleep...although a single female is wary and watches our truck as we pass.

And sometimes we just stop and photograph the night skies.

More often than not we run across someone enjoying their late night dinner.

"Hey....eating here...pal..."

"Is that MY Wildebeest, you're gnawing????"

"Christ, here they come again...we're trying to get some sleep here...enough with the headlights, already!!!"

"Oh Cedric...don't be a stick in the mud...give them a good roar...that's all they're waiting for..."

"If they don't turn those bloody headlamps off..I'm going to give them a bit more than a roar..."

"...snork...snuffle...what...who...errrr...oh it's them..."

(...and aren't bushbabies the cutest things...)

"...trying to get some sleep here...effing tourists..."

"Ya come any closer, I'll QUILL ya..."

"You see, Chester, you just have to take control of the situation!"

"PISS OFF!!!"

"While the lionesses are asleep we can graze in peace!"

"I'm telling you, honey...this neighborhood is goin' straight to hell!!!"

"That's it...if he hits me with that freakin' spotlight one more time I'm adding some variety to my diet...that's all I'm sayin'..."

"...thanks for the grub, Bub!"

"I've GOT to cut back on the CAFFEINE."

"Been bothering you too, eh????"

"Hey...just having a little midnight snack...I'm starting that diet tomorrow...really."

"Now Cedric, calm yourself before you get us in all sorts of trouble!"

"Damn it, Cedric...where'd ya even get a lighter???"

Hope you've enjoyed the night safari...now to get this fire out.

"No...I've no idea how he got my lighter...bloody lion!"
