His and Her Day's Out...Centering...and Pie Cookies

This may be my Mantra for the rest of the year.

"Centering" after what seems like inexhaustible ups and downs for the last month and a half.  The circumstances, I might add, are completely beyond me, and certainly not something I have any control over.  It has taken me a while to both acknowledge and accept those facts.  Just saying them out loud and putting it here in writing makes me feel better, somehow. And so...on we go.
Smiling.
Breathing.
And Going Slowly.

Maybe by the end of the year I can put it all into words.
Not Yet.

So Nicole and Emma (and Rebecca) enjoyed their Chicago Girl's Day Out together and brought back some great pictures.

                                           (...taken in the Cloud Gate...)

And while they were busy wandering Chicago and The Navy Pier, Indoor Gardens and Shoppes, The Hershey Factory, The Lego World, The American Doll Store, and enjoying a Chicago Hotdog...the guys were having their OWN day out.

With Racecars and Batter's Cages, Games and loads of prize tickets won.  And so glad that both he and his big brother Preston got to spend the day together, as well.

You guys are awesome parents!

Never ever let anyone tell you any different.

I tried a new Recipe over the weekend that is a keeper.
I modified it from Apple to Raspberry...but so easy and quite good.

Fruit Pie Cookies

One box refrigerator pie crust  (two flat 9 inch crusts)

1 can pie filling any flavor

Unroll crust and top with a cup of pie filling...spreading to the edges.

Pie filling should  be about 1/4 inch thick.

Cut second crust into long strips for lattice work.

Weave lattice workover the top of crust/filling.

Cut Pie Cookies with flour dusted biscuit cutter working from the center out...you should get a dozen or more cookies this way.

Transfer cookies to flat baking pan.

Top with sanding sugar.  (for Apple you can also sprinkle with Cinnamon)

Bake at 350 degrees until Pie Crust is done and slightly browned.

Let cool completely before serving.

Enjoy!

May fix the Apple Version with the addition of soft caramel and pecans on Thanksgiving!

Last Night's Non-Debate with Rachel Maddow...Greek...Ugly Christmas Sweater Time...And it's off to Chicago...

So...this morning's headlines used terms like "Ripped" and "Clashed"..."Tore At" and "Slammed" in reference to O' Malley and Sander's approach to Hillary Clinton. Which would be fine...except that it never ACTUALLY happened.

I know, because I watched the interviews in their entirety.

As a matter of fact, Sanders actually spoke out saying that he was absolutely NOT going to engage in mud-slinging against Hillary during his campaign. He has said this since he STARTED his bid.

Still...I guess the media can't let little things like FACTS stand in the way of a good story. And politeness doesn't inspire click-bait or sell papers like using words like "Slammed" and "Ripped", i suppose.

"If I can't find a reindeer...I'll make one instead."

It is disgusting.

And although I don't care much for Rachel Maddow, or her style...I was pretty impressed with last night's interviews. With all three candidates. I especially liked the format. Nice. Casual. One on One. Not the Three-Ring-Circus approach of the last GOP debate where the candidates objectives seem to be along the line of zoo monkeys.

Screech a lot and fling poo.

O'Malley did a very good job of presenting himself.

They all did.

Of course I was settling in digesting after Saganaki, Roasted Spiced Lamb, Tzatziki Sauce and Pita Bread, having earlier accompanied Chris and Tina to my Favorite Greek Restaurant in Avon.

                                                                 OPA!

Would love to do Saganaki at home...but would probably burn the kitchen down.

We had a great time!  Going to try my hand at making Avegolemono Soup again. Tina loves it, too. I tried years ago, but added the eggs too slowly (or maybe too quickly) so instead of having nice creamy Chicken, Orzo and Lemon Soup...I ended up with a semi-solid that looked a lot a bowlful of lumpy mashed potatoes. And tasted even worse.

Maybe the second time will be a charm.

Was rummaging through my Bucket (Life) List and noted an entry whose time has come.

The UGLY Christmas Sweater

I have seen a LOT of these made.
I have NEVER made or wore one myself.

And last year I added it to my list as one of those things I have always wanted to do/try.

Today a small light went off and I started thinking about an upcoming early December Family Gathering/ Thanksgiving & Christmas Dinner of Brothers and Sisters and my kids and their's and grands...and thought

"If not NOW, then WHEN...."

Besides...this gang is perfect. We will either come up with the most amazing creative, possibly offensive, stuff ever...or we will be barred from Cracker Barrel for LIFE.

Which would be a way cool Christmas Story, forever...so it is kind of a win-win!

Anyway, I am starting on mine this week. I think Chris is even going to add lights and baubles to his beard!  A buddy of mine's family used to do something similar at their family reunion...tricking out golf carts and playing poker.

Don't Judge!

Not a Ugly Sweater Contest, per se...more of a

"Hey ya'll lookit THIS!"

And Nicole and Emma leaving at "Way-too-damn-early" this morning heading to Chicago...Navy Pier...The Bean...The Hershey's Chocolate Shoppe and the American Girl Doll Store where she and Emma had reservations for Tea with her doll "Rebecca".
Can't WAIT to see the pics...and hear all about it!

Enjoying My Weekend of Relaxation!

                                                         Later....

End of the Season Tidying...Fall Boxes and Recipe for Spiced Potato Wedges

(stock photo but I really really want a potting bench like this)

Spent the last couple of days outside in the now-unseasonably-warm weather, bringing the plants in that cannot survive the late Fall chill.

The trees have dulled to their yellows and muted browns. The largest in the middle of the Commons (after last evening's winds) completely denuded. Bare branches scraping a crisp blue sky.

So here I am.

Another Winter quickly approaching and dirt 'neath my nails and muddy knee'd jeans as I prune the roses back and  dig the yellow daylilies and divide the purple flag irises whose roots gnarl above the surface of the soil like so many bunions and corns on an old man.

The Curly-Spider trimmed and a decision made. Earlier, I had left the potted babies and the original plant out in a moment of gardening triage to succumb to the elements...but the Patron St. of Plants in me couldn't do it. So they are bundled up with the rest to over-winter in my bathroom with a sprawling
Philodendron until Spring. Face it...I could set your Grandma on an ice floe to drift...but I can't watch a perfectly healthy green plant wither and die without interceding.
That is a little messed up. I know.

Cleaning and stacking the clay-pots and hand tools.  Repotting that which needs repotted. Soon to strip the remains of the Morning Glories and stow the trellis until next year. The herbs are dried and seeds gathered and set back for next season. Tucked my Daffodil bulbs in for Spring!

A happy moment when I checked the sprig of Basil I had snipped and saved in a wine glass with water to see if it would root.  It was positively bristling with new roots and the beginnings of tiny leaves. I filled a small clay pot with some of this year's black compost, and now have it sitting on my stove to grow and provide fresh basil for Caprese and Bruchetta throughout the snowy months. So glad this worked!

Saved some of my miniature rose cuttings to potato root this winter and propagate.

Repurposed the very bottom curve of the Halloween pumpkin and filled it with black oily sunflower seeds...although it quickly became apparent that this was much more of a treat for the local squirrels than it was the Jays and Cardinals (as evidenced by the gnawed areas of the pumpkin shell iself) .

The Compost Bin is in its third year now and doing well. I can't believe it took me over 50 years to discover this gardening gem. In goes peelings, scraps, twigs, newspaper, cardboard, pumpkin carvings, trimmings from all the plants...oh...and a handful of red worms. Out comes some of the richest black soil you've ever seen.  Going to top dress the border before mulching and start layering the new box for next year.  So nice to have an ample supply of rich compost at hand...and a nice way to reuse scrap as well. And never a bad smell...just rich loamy soil!

Discovered (by a tip from Marti...an Oregon friend) that baking apples, pears, pumpkins and peaches for Butters works so so well. Just finished a large batch of Baked Peach Butter...some of which is making its way into

"Idgy's Fall Box"

It is that time again.

Good THINGS always come in boxes!

This year my Fall Box (for her) will include Handmade Butterscotch Balls dipped in Milk Chocolate...Baked Peach Butter...Daffodil Bulbs, Shared Yellow Day Lily Roots for Fall Planting,  Shared Iris Divisions, Loose Ginger-Peach Tea and both a porcelain Infuser Mug, and a heart-shaped infuser tea spoon (got one for each of us from eBay)...and whatever else fits in before Monday's post. May even tuck in a couple of these Curly Spider Plant Babies.  (...if you are reading this you have been warned...)

She is ready to mail mine, as well!

Yes...good things always come in boxes.

Yesterday's local elections went well and next year if we "Dispence with Pence" in Indiana...perhaps we can get some things accomplished now that Joe Hogsett is the Mayor of Indianapolis!

Doty is now our new mayor (in Greencastle), as well.
I foresee good things ahead!

Spiced Potato Wedges

I use red potatoes for this.

2 medium potatoes per serving.

1 tablespoon of butter melted

paprika

salt

Cut the potatoes lengthwise in half. Then cut each half into two wedges.

Mix with melted butter until evenly coated...then spread in a flat baking pan cut edges up in a single layer.

Sprinkle with paprika and salt lightly.

Bake at 305 until fork tender and slightly browned.

Great to dip in ketchup or cheese.

Enjoy!

Halloween....Post-Halloween...and November is HERE!

Alice Cooper

So...did anyone else wake up this morning...stumble into the bathroom and look in the mirror to say

"Great Scott...I've Morphed into ALICE COOPER."

(...extra points if you just read that in Christopher Lloyd's voice...)

Had such a good time turning into something of a Zombie and a Voodoo Doll yesterday...and it was great...

But today, I am STILL removing black polish from my nails...adhesive from my cheeks, and the dark under-liner remains residually giving me a decidedly Pirate of the Caribbean "Jack Sparrow" eyes for the foreseeable future.

"Pirate"

~laughing~

Wonderful Halloween!

Which actually started Friday in Greencastle. And a visit with Shel and Baby Turtle (Fred Jr.) and Tina, Kimberly and Emma Jean.

Loved Kimber as a spider-web with Emma Jean as the Spider!

And Pumpkins were carved and lit!

Chris was off to celebrate with Tina and family this year!

And Nicole and I left early in the morning chill for Brenden and Emma's final Soccer Games of the Season.

Emma's Coach even came dressed as a Jedi.

"Use The Force to get that GOAL, Kyle!"

Go Team!

And Awards.

We came back here, shortly, for Hot Chocolate and Raspberry Cheese Danish...then went to work on our make-up and costuming.

And Dad and Aiden Sporting matching tattoos. Relax...the baby's were vinyl temporary.

Completing the ensemble with a leather punk rocker jacket, made by Nicole, and a pair of skinny jeans.

Emma was the Cheshire Cat and Brenden Morphed into Spider-Man before my very eyes!

And off they went to Trick or Treat!

I sat out by the patio table with this

Passing out the candy has always been a special treat for me. I love seeing all the kids, and sometimes their parents, dressed for the evening! And then there is the close proximity to the chocolate to be considered.  The Older kids and parents found my Voodoo Zombie

 "Way cool"

but it was a bit spooky for the littler ones. May change up to something less ghoulish next Halloween.

It was amazing how many little ghouls and goblins were out. Over 90 by their place, I would guesstimate. One group, alone, numbered nearly 30.  Nicki had filled two huge stainless steel bowls with candy...and before 8:00 it was gone. Every last piece.

Okay except the two packs of M&M's that she and I squirrelled back anticipating a chocolate shortage by the end of the evening.

Then the kids were back with their booty. We settled in to watch Jeff Dunham's Halloween Special "Minding the Monsters"...had a big bowlful of Nicki's chili that had been simmering in the crock-pot for hours, and listened to James play his new guitar!

The FlameKat.

And it is beastly.

So anyway...moving a bit slowly today, and I see a nap in my near future.

NOVEMBER.

Already.
How can it be so???

Soon to be filled with (for Nicole and Emma from me) a trip  to Chicago and the American Girl Doll Store and Navy Pier, She and James' 2nd Anniversary  Getaway, Sharon's Birthday Party here this year, Lennon's 27th Birthday, Thanksgiving for the kids HERE, and about a million details before December.

It is going to be a busy month.

Funny how the leaves have changed from their bright October reds, yellows and orange, to many shades of brown...seemingly overnight. Muted Browns. The colour of Indiana in November!

With that a last burst of warmth before Winter proper slips in.

Happy November...

(...now I am going to get back to trying to remove this eye-liner residual...)

Remember to VOTE this Tuesday!
