Samaria Gorge National Park (Crete)

The gorge is one of the longest in Europe. Over 11 miles of mountains, ruins, boulders, scrub pines, dry creek-beds or crystal clear streams depending on the season.

The hike takes approximately 7 hours.

Through the magic of You Tube...you can explore it here

In around 20 minutes.

No 90-100 degree heat. No inaccessibility. No swarms of hiking tourists.  Just the beautiful scenery, sounds and a glimpse of some of the fauna that lives in this gorge.

The National Park was established in 1962.  It is a World Biosphere Reserve.
The most famous part of the gorge is known as The Iron Gates...shown here

A place where the gorge narrows to 13 feet across and 980 feet high.

                                               Breathtaking!

The crystal clear blue tinge to the water
is because of the vast amount of limestone it runs through

I think I may actually have to paint this tree and gorge, soon!
Capture a bit of Crete on canvas.

Enjoy the video tour.

Tomorrow,
we will check out the city of Heraklion
and The Minoan Palace of Knossos.
