Virtual Islands: Graciosa

Good Morning...

Today we are (virtually) off to the second island in our adventure.

We will follow Lovegrove's adventures and visit Graciosa, just off Portugal.

Okay...this is a bit more like it.

In fact this will do quite nicely.

The name means graceful or enchanting island in Portuguese. And from everything I've seen so far...it is.

It is also referred to as White Island and is located in the Azores.

Where the Azores are located on the World Map.

Just so we are all in the same general area.

Graciosa is 6.2 miles long and 4.3 miles wide and is a volcanic island.

Subject to earthquakes and not densely populated. Around 4800 people.

At least this island sports a couple proper beaches...and no Musk-oxen or Polar Bears.

(...A nice change from Wrangel....)

The temperature is mid-60's, currently, but promises to be in the 70's by noon.

The populated area seems to be clean and compact.

The Lighthouse

One of the fascinating additions to this island may be the bullfighting arena that they have built in the middle of the extinct volcano crater.

Creative use of space.

(..plus..as we learned, In Portugal...they don't KILL the bulls here...)

Diving, sailing, exploring the depths of volcanic caves, hiking and bicycling...Graciosa seemly has a little something for everyone!

And Queijadas...a Graciosa Specialty

and the recipe:

An egg custard type filling in a pastry tart shell...and sprinkled with cinnamon.
Baked in a cupcake tin.

I may make these this weekend!
