When I think of the Shetland Islands, I have to admit, these are the first little guys to come to mind. Sturdy, short and shaggy the Shetland Ponies are as much an evolutionary product of the harsh small island environment, as the stunted growth and tiny deer of Deer Key in the Florida Keys.

They are adaptable and have been used throughout centuries to ride, carry or pull loads, or in the mines for coal carts.

Settlements on the inhabited isles tend to cluster around shorelines and, not surprisingly, the principle industry is fishing.
It is purported to be haunted by the former mistress of the house, her servant girl and a dog. Several sightings are said to have been made. If Ghost Stories are your thing, you will enjoy this.

Because of the treacherous rocky shorelines there are lighthouses everywhere.
Dotted throughout the windswept countryside these days are wind turbines for generating electricity. An intelligent use of an inexhaustible natural resource.
