Scottish Tartans and Clans

Years back, when a buddy of mine was tracing his Scottish Ancestry he showed me this plaid pattern...explaining that  it was the Tartan of His Clan. Since I had no prior knowledge of Tartan outside of buffalo plaid shirts (the redneck clan?), had no idea he even had a Clan, had never seen him in a kilt (thankfully)

(  although we both knew all the lyrics to The Drunken Scotsman...and I STILL have no idea why...)

It would have certainly passed into that land of

"All the Trivia You Acquire Through a Lifetime"

if it hadn't been for this Scottish Virtual Adventure.

It would appear that along with Family Coat of Arms...each Clan was identifiable by the colours of their Tartan Flannel.
Used to make Kilts.

Examples include

                                                     Royal Stewart

                                                            Clan Gunn

                                                     MacGregor Tartan

                                      Black Watch or Campbell Tartan

I'm pretty sure I have spent more than one Fall sporting Royal Stewart, myself. Probably while drinking a Yoo-Hoo Soda or eating a Moon Pie.

~laughing~

Sir Sean Connery in a Kilt
(and how does he manage to pull this off and still look good?)

                                                      Connery Tartan

And yes...the whole commando kilt thing is TRUE.
