Virtual Islands: South Georgia Island

Very funny, Lovegrove.

When I heard South Georgia Island I was envisioning Ripe Peaches, and Spanish Moss hanging from trees. Grits and Sweet Tea.

This South Georgia Island is just off the coast of Antarctica...has zero permanent human habitation..and the only year around residents seem to be sea birds, fur and elephant seals...oh...and an enormous penguin population.

Yeah...can we all just agree that Lovegrove just SUCKS at planning island vacations???

We're here now...

Might as well take a quick (cold) look around.

This morning the temperature on the island is a balmy 31 degrees. It averages 28 degrees year around, so 31 is high.

(...yeah...bet you are thankful this is virtual, eh)

The shores are dotted with penguins.

Thousands of them.

There are also fur seals

and Elephant Seals

Which kind of reminded me of a cross between Jabba the Hutt and two teenage boys having a belching contest.

Your results may vary.

The island is about 104 miles long and 23 miles wide...and is part of the Sandwich Islands.

Only a handful of scientists spend any appreciable time here...and tourists who come during the summer months (December- March) to view the wildlife.
