Virtual Islands: St. Kilda

St. Kilda, Scotland.

It has been called "The Island on the Edge of the World".

40 miles North of Uist one of four islands making up an archipelago.

The island uninhabited now...with only parties from the mainland in the summer to keep the ruins of stone houses from earlier settlements intact/restored and tourists exploring the ruins.

Although the population of St. Kilda probably never exceeded 180 people, the last were evacuated in 1930.

 Evacuation of St. Kilda.

Evacuated on  August  29th, 1930

After writing a letter to Scotland explaining that life on the island was no longer sustainable.

The population at the time of evacuation was 36.
